Abstract: The decade 1954 to 1963 was exceptionally fruitful for French music on disc, involving the two main Paris orchestras, that of the ORTF and that of the Société des Concerts du Conservatoire. This presentation illustrates oustanding recordings by these two orchestras of French repertoire under the direction of two foreign francophile conductors working 'in exile': the English Sir Thomas Beecham (in Chabrier's 'Gwendoline' Overture, one of Debussy's favourite orchestral works), and the Romanian Constantin Silvestri, protégé and friend of Enescu (in Debussy’s orchestral Nocturnes and Ravel’s Boléro).
