In rehearsal with Kenneth Tay

Activity: External performance, talk or presentation › Talk for a mainly non-academic audience (e.g. for the general public, community or industry)

Description

I led an interactive session that combined live rehearsal, shared music‑making, and discussion on expanding the choral repertoire. I introduced contemporary works by living composers, explored practical strategies for teaching unfamiliar music, and encouraged conductors to consider composition and commissioning as part of their artistic practice.

Synopsis:

What does the choral "canon" mean for today's ensembles, and how might we move beyond it responsibly? This interactive workshop invites conductors to explore different approaches to repertoire through rehearsal demonstrations, singing, and improvisation. Participants will gain practical strategies for introducing new sound worlds, helping singers learn unfamiliar scores more efficiently, and engaging with accessible contemporary works. The session also reflects on the role of the conductor as composer and arranger, and considers how commissioning (even on a modest scale) can shape the future of choral music.
