Description
Zoom talk to the Traditional Song Forum. (One of four invited speakers at TSF Online 12.) ‘Scottish Song-Collector Alexander Campbell and his Ethnomusicological Exploits’ – You cannot beat the early 19th-century song-collector Alexander Campbell for enthusiasm, energy or commitment. Indeed, he turned his hand to various other enterprises before embarking on a trip round the Highlands and the Hebrides in pursuit of his dream – the collection of Scottish songs for his ‘Albyn’s Anthology’. He attempted a similar trip to the Scottish Borders the following year. It is also interesting to learn more about those who supported his venture – it truly was a case of not just ‘what you know’, but also ‘who’! It would be fair to describe him as a flawed genius, in some senses, but his legacy is nonetheless interesting to anyone enthusiastic about historical Scottish and Borders songs.
