Catherine is a Glasgow based British Sign Language/English interpreter with a wide general practice who specialises in performance work. She has worked with a range of companies and theatre makers including National Theatre of Scotland, Scotland's only Gaelic medium theatre company, Theatre Gu Leor, and The Tron Theatre as well as a number of independent companies including Tenterhooks Theatre, Independent Arts Projects, and has developed a style of work that attempts to offer both the company and audience an innovative way of engaging with interpreted performance. Catherine also specialises in stand-up comedy interpreting beginning in 1998 and has worked closely with a number of performers including Adam Hills, Frankie Boyle and Sarah Millican. She appears on Adam Hills’ DVDs Happyism (2013) and Clown Heart (2017) and is the first, and only, interpreter in the UK to be filmed live for inclusion on a stand-up comedy DVD.

She has been a BSL/English interpreter since 1994 and has worked in multiple fields including education, social services, medicine and the justice system and contributed a section to a chapter of Children and Justice: Overcoming Language Barriers. Cooperation in interpreter mediated questioning of minors. She specialised in academia for many years which included almost 10 years as an interpreter trainer at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh. In the past five years, Catherine has been a support tutor for BSL-using postgraduate students offering translation of academic texts as well as supported study sessions and proof reading/editing of thesis writings. She was most recently a research supervisor at the University of Siena with a focus on interpreted theatre.

Catherine presents at conferences and workshops including the Creative Licht programme which was co-created with National Theatre of Scotland, Solar Bear Theatre Company, Birds of Paradise Theatre Company, and Yvonne Strain (SignArts). She presents on the nature of interpreted performance as an art form as well as a translation activity and the questions that raises around the hybrid nature of the practice and effect on the embodied work. Her current focus is her PhD research, which is situated in renaissance text productions, which asks questions around how the dramaturgy of the embedding of the interpreter affects the interpreter performer as they embody text in performance.
