This article investigates the musical life and works of Auguste Mimart (1828–1868) from the limited sources available to date. Mimart, a French composer and conductor, held an important place in the developing genre of brass chamber music. Among his compositions are six quintets and six septets for brass instruments. This study explores the societal contexts in which he was working, his connections to London and beyond, and how these factors may have influenced his composition as well as the acceptance and performance of his quintets and septets.
