Developed during the residency in the European Seminar for Choral Composers in Aosta, Italy. World premiere by The Marian Consort, dir. Rory McCleery, at the Fridays at One concert series in the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Stevenson Hall.
This double choir setting captures two angels, cloaked in flames, in a music dialogue. After a brief aleatoric introduction, the music begins with a short homage to the Renaissance composer Jacobus Gallus, whose setting of the same text has resonated from the 16th Century. The polyphonic texture characteristic of Gallus’s time then unfolds to “Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth…”, reflecting the divine proclamation of the angels. The middle section turns quiet and somewhat introspective, seeking to evoke the mystery of the faith, before returning to the loud declamatory passage of the angels.
