Details
A setting for the Middle English text "Lullay, my fader" in MS Stanbrook Abbey 3, fol. 241v. The setting draws upon 16th century polyphonic metrical approaches to contrapuntal writing in that the composition utilising flexible metre and metrical independence of the parts. The melodic materials are tonally conceived with the harmonies are formed principally as a consequence of the contrapuntal procedures. The result is a fluid and free flowing texture that continuously unfolds between the short refrain that bookends the piece.
The first performance took place at the Service of Nine Lessons and Carols at Glasgow Cathedral on 17th December 2023, sung by the Cathedral Choir and directed by Andrew Forbes.
