The ubiquity of the misused notion of creativity has become firmly socially situated as a requirement of everyday life. The current deafness of the political and socio historical discourse around creativity requires that we seek an understanding that resists and questions the individualistic aesthetic of the now, and any determinate sense of what creativity has to be. This year long study explores the lives of the artists who live and work within the Mill, a collective pocket of resistance to the present-day noise and bluster of such populist creativity, that Reckwitz seeks to capture in his concept of the creative dispoitif. As such this study seeks to develop Reckwitz’s alternative concept of profane creativity through the lens of Castoriadis, in order to provide an insight into the fine balance of the intertwined nature of profane experimenting, inventing and idiosyncrasies that are integral to the Mill’s artistic community’s imaginings.
