Ties that Bind and Skills that Endure: Transferable Crofting Skills of the Hebridean-Quebec Settlers / Ceanglaichean agus Sgilean a Mhaireas: Sgilean Croitearachd Luchd-tuineachaidh Innse Gall ann an Cuibeac, [tri-lingual publication with CD and DVD] Grace Note Publication, Ochtertyre, 2010.
Synopsis::
The book described how Crofters are used to adjust to variable conditions, as they learn from the earliest age how to adapt to sudden changes. The most memorable time for 'changing conditions' in crofting history dates to the mid-1800s when, year after year, times were so bad that crops were a disastrous failure and people were starving. Many areas of the Highlands and Islands were affected during an era well known in Ireland as The Potato Famine. In Gaelic Scotland, it was spoken of as a' Bhliadhna a ghais am buntataA"-the year the potato failed; it was not just one year, however, but decades. Crofters from North Uist, Harris & Lewis were moved to Lower Canada where they help to build communities out of the wilderness (Eastern Township, Quebec).
