Jess Thorpe presents the genesis of introducing the post-dramatic theatrical practice known as the devised theatre into Scottish prisons. The term means collective work on theatrical productions using the improvisation method. The author presents the various stages of the production process. She cites examples of exercises, gives tips and shares her experiences. Draws attention to the democratic dimension of the questions used as part of the devised theatre working method. The author of the text, and at the same time the creator, stands for a multitude of voices, versions and narratives. The aim of Thorpe's theatrical activities with women and men in Scottish prisons is to perceive art as supporting people living behind prison walls in 'building their own identity' and creating communities based on creative dialogue. Artists can also reap the benefits of working in prisons. One of them is strengthening faith in the "transformative power of art".
