Details

This is an example of a digital release sharing new insights into key repertoire from a significant composer. As a first recording of important new works, this disc helps to establish the scholarly infrastructure for cello performance by providing a reference performance of a significant work by William Sweeney, namely, his 30-minute Sonata for Cello and Piano. The Sonata for Cello and Piano, a significant and rigorously argued work that places great demands on both members of the duo, was jointly inspired by and dedicated to the researcher’s long-term collaborator Robert Irvine (see Irvine1), and his Finnish friend and colleague Erkki Lahesmaa. Irvine and Lahesmaa collaborated on twin premieres sharing creative insights as they developed their interpretations, with Lahesmaa giving the Scottish premiere and Irvine giving the Finnish premiere; Pavri performed with both Lahesmaa and Irvine in these twin premieres, thereby fulfilling a unique creative and interpretative role. The insights gained through this process are shared for a wider audience in this release.
