About

“How to Undress in Front of Your Husband” is a video work made using found footage from the 1940s and 50s and scored for 14 musicians. The videos were known as instructional or educational videos for women, basically telling them how to look, act and behave in order to get a husband or attract a man’s attention.
I was attracted to the footage because there’s so much comparison between what happens now in terms of what women are fed through the media - how they feel about their bodies and how they look - and what was happening back then. The main difference is that looking back at that original footage now, it seems that the pressure on women to be/say/do/act a certain way was a little bit more blatant, but it’s something that definitely still happens now and affects women today.
