About
The Maid That Tends The Goats is a supposed ancient Scottish air that is now more commonly performed as a strathspey. In this composition for bass clarinet and electronics, ideas from the original tune punctuate a tape part composed of bass clarinet samples that have been warped to produce undulating drones and weaving rhythmic movement. Focussing the timbral qualities of the instrument to produce a bagpipe of sorts, The Maid That Tends The Goats continues an ongoing line of inquiry into the historical representation and performance of women within the context of Scottish traditional music.
