Ruth Crouch

Biography

I was born in London and studied with Emanuel Hurwitz at the Royal Academy of Music, also with Professor Max Rostal in Switzerland.

I spent the next few years as a member of the contempory music group Lontano with whom I toured extensively, appeared at the Proms, made many BBC recordings & several CDs

During this time I played with many other chamber groups, most regularly with the London Sinfonietta, sometimes as leader & as soloist.

On original instruments, I have played with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and appeared as Guest Leader with John Eliot Gardiner’s Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique.

Since moving to Scotland as Assistant Leader of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra,I have continued to guest-lead other orchestras as well as the Edinburgh Quartet. I play a great deal of chamber music within the SCO & with other ensembles such as Red Note & Hebrides.

I have very much enjoyed my teaching at RCS over the past few years and would like to pass on my enthusiasm for different periods & styles of music to my students. I have a great interest in the practicalities of playing in a historically informed way on modern instruments-especially in Baroque & Classical music. I also enjoy teaching & coaching 20th Century repertoire- Stravinsky Bartok Messiaen as well as the 2nd Viennese School.
